“After Mama died, it was the last straw, you know? It was so hard surviving here on the daily, and when she died, all the light fell away. I was consumed in complete and utter darkness. There was no light, nothing to look forward to. Mama and Daddy were my world, and then one day my world changed, and I had no power to correct the imbalance.”

I looked over to see that Meekai was gently shaking his head, then nodding. He had some internal conversation going on, but he always did. I’d learned to keep going, knowing he’d eventually say something. But this was different, the energy was different, and I didn’t know why. I went to continue, but I was positive I’d lost him.

“Meekai? Is something wrong?”

He looked over to me. “Can you pull up your shirt, Radley?” His face gave nothing away, other than he wasn’t joking when he asked me to lift my shirt.

“What? I kill the romantic vibe for you?” I joked, but he didn’t return my smile.

“No, I’m pretty sure the vibe is about to amp up a little bit, baby. Lift your shirt, show me what it says,” he pushed.

I screwed up my lips, not a clue why he was acting so serious and did as he asked with a weary shrug. I slowly inched my shirt up and he mirrored my movements, slowly lifting his. I tipped my head to the side and whispered his name, but he didn’t reply, just smiled.

As the words displayed on my ribs came into sight, he stopped for the briefest second and took a few steps closer to take it in. He seemed to be fascinated with the six words inscribed in black ink and shut his eyes. He stood stock-still and exhaled with a knowing smile, removing his shirt the rest of the way, slowly turning so his back was to me.

I dropped my shirt and took two steps toward him, no idea of what was going on or what was about to happen. I just knew it wasn’t going the way I’d planned it, but it seemed God had bigger plans than even I could fathom.

My eyes took in the five words tattooed under the wingspan of the skull. A shocked gasp left my mouth so fast that Meekai flinched as my breath hit his skin. I ran my fingers along the curve of the words, reading them over and over as his body shivered at my touch.

I read the words out loud, just to be sure the moment was real.

“Deliver me into the light,” I whispered, over a hiccup of emotion.

Meekai turned around to face me, his eyes full of unshed tears as he pulled up the side of my shirt. “Lead me out of the dark,” he whispered back.

“Meekai, how . . . how is this possible?” I stuttered.

“It’s fate, kissed with the impossible, baby. It’s a love letter to the both of us, a sign to say we were written for one another, beyond our understanding.
